What Causes Concrete Sinking?

sinking concrete

Poor compaction of the subgrade

One of the primary causes of concrete sinking is poor compaction of the subgrade. The subgrade is the layer of soil or other material that sits beneath the concrete slab. If this layer is not properly compacted, it can settle over time and cause the concrete to sink and foundation damage. Poor compaction can be caused by a number of factors, including poor drainage, inadequate compaction equipment, and improper subgrade preparation.

Erosion in another problem that usually is caused by poor compaction. Erosion can occur when rainwater or other water sources wash away the soil underneath the concrete slab. This can happen if the concrete is not properly sealed or if there are cracks or other openings in the slab that allow water to seep through.

Concrete on Steep slope

When concrete is placed on a steep slope, there is an increased risk for the concrete to sink. This can be caused by a number of factors, including:

  • The weight of the concrete itself can cause it to sink into the ground.
  • If the ground is not level, the concrete can settle unevenly and sink.
  • If the ground is not compacted properly, it can settle and cause the concrete to sink.
  • If there is too much water in the mix, the concrete can become soupy and sink.
  • If the concrete is placed on top of an existing layer of concrete, it can sink

Poor drainage around the slab

One of the primary causes of sunken concrete is poor drainage around the slab. If water is not properly drained away from the concrete, it can seep underneath and cause the ground to become saturated. The saturated ground will then put pressure on the slab. This can lead to cracks in the concrete, and eventually, the concrete may start to sink. If you have cracks in concrete, then you can read more here about concrete repair here.

Tree roots

One of the other common causes of sinking concrete is tree roots. As trees grow, their roots can extends underground and put pressure on the concrete. Over time, this can cause the concrete to sink or crack. If you have trees on your property, it’s important to monitor them closely. If you notice that the roots are growing towards the concrete, you may need to have the tree trimmed. This will help to prevent the roots from damaging the concrete.

If your concrete has already been damaged by tree roots, you’ll need to take action to repair it. This may involve excavating the area around the tree and removing the roots. Once the roots have been removed, you can begin to repair the cracks in the concrete and level out the slab. With proper care and maintenance, you can prevent your concrete from being damaged by tree roots.

Our Concrete  Leveling Process

Concrete Leveling mobile al

The first step is to assess the damage and come up with a game plan. We will need to know the dimensions of the area that needs to be repaired, as well as the severity of the damage. From there, we will be able to determine how much concrete will be needed and what kind of repairs need to be made.

Next, we will clean the area and prepare it for repair. This may involve pressure washing, removing any loose debris, and making sure the surface is smooth. Once the area is prepared, we can begin repairing any cracks or holes.

After the repairs are made, we will begin injecting the foaming agent under the slab. This will help to raise the concrete back to its original level. Once the concrete is lifted, we will level it off so that it is even with the surrounding area.
